Further Statement on Tayside Book Quality

We have had yet more problems with the Tayside Area book dated 8th September 2014. As we have mentioned before, the copies arrived with up to 33 pages partially printed, or not printed at all.

We have had some issues with this book, although the proof was fine. Eight weeks after I’d submitted the file, we still never had a perfect copy.

After a one hour terse phone call with the commercial director of the printing company, they agreed.

Later that afternoon I suggested reprinting a supplement to bring the timetable right up to date, meaning both us and our long-suffering customers get something out of this sorry affair!

It is my thoughts right now they are trying to ruin my reputation and company.

After requesting an email reply at some stage of last week, we got an email today saying that the proof of the supplement (48pp booklet with the defective pages, and the ones which changed right up to last Monday 24th November) will be with us tomorrow or Wednesday.

Despite their attempts to blame the customer i.e. me, I know we are not the only ones with these problems, following the introduction of their new system.

For now I can only sincerely apologise. I know the service we have been giving lately has not been the best, and for that I can give you my genuine feelings.

Tuesday 21st October 2014

Saturday 12th October 2014
After a few initial gremlins (the printer’s system corrupted the file), all is now well with the Tayside book. All orders have been passed to the printer. The book ended up as 984 pages of information for £24 including postage – and you can still buy a copy via or
A few bugs crept into the book. There will also be a regularly-updated list of changes since production (and any subsequently-reported bugs!), although not an Update in our traditional style, which can be accessed via the second link above.
The book itself features text as close to the printed leaflet size as we can, and we’d welcome all feedback on the print size in this one – and whether it is worth the extra bulk and pages for greater clarity.

Friday 11th October 2014
Our Dundee-area timetable site, has been revamped over the past week. The site is also a companion to our recent timetable book, covering all of Tayside.
It was designed to be simple schedules and fares and maps only, no JavaScript, no pop-ups, no entering journey details – just simple information, whenever you needed it. This started for Dundee Technology Park when I began working there in October 2002. Seven years later we expanded to the entire city, and now in October 2014, covering everything public in Angus, Dundee City, and Perth & Kinross council areas. The site went live today, so I’d appreciate any feedback, bugs, wrong times etc. via the usual methods.
Our Archive page no longer has the timetables before the current issues, as sometimes the older ones would show up on an online search. Therefore, to combat this, the old stuff is going to a separate DropBox directory, which doesn’t get indexed by Google – meaning we can keep everything and everyone happy.
Feel free to drop me a message if you want the link to the old stuff.

Friday 26th September 2014
Happy Friday!

We’ve had a total flurry of orders this week – for which I say thanks!
Now, good news for our customers in the South East – we’re coming back to LOTS Autumn Transport Spectacular!  Saturday 25th October 2014, 10.00 – 15.30, and £3 entry. The event is being held at the RAF Museum in Collindale, London. Why not combine it with a family visit for the rest of the pack, while you browse 60 stalls including ours! Full directions can be had via then click on Autumn Transport Spectacular.
Our stall will be on the right as you come in, and in the back tables. Our location is marked in pink below.

Our printing partner have been expanding to cope with demand, including a new venture called The Great British Book Shop. To ensure everyone gets served on time, the turnaround times have been widened by a few days. This does not mean the service is now slower – in many cases you will have your books much sooner! It’s just to be more realistic – the printing version of adding more running time I guess.
The below are the new printing turn-around times, and please add a further 3-4 days from this time for postage by Royal Mail or DPD couriers. If you’ve not had your books within 21 calendar days (Strathtay book 28 days as it’s hardback) from the date of our acknowledgement, please remind me!
Mono Paperback = 7-10 working days for any quantity
Mono Hardback = 10-15 working days for any quantity
Colour Paperback = 7-10 working days for 1-24 copies, 10-15 working days for 25 copies
Colour Hardback = 10-15 working days for any quantity
Steven Knight books are unchanged at 2-3 working days.

Steven Knight has another new book ready this week – Stagecoach Oxford.

Our latest Fleet Handbook covers the Stagecoach Oxfordshire fleet, which has operations across Oxfordshire from depots at Oxford, Witney and Banbury. Besides a fleet of Electric Hybrid double decks there is also a sizeable fleet of ‘Gold’-specification Scania/Enviro 400s along with a dedicated fleet of 26 Van Hool Astromega coaches for the successful Oxford tube operation.
This is the second of our Fleet Handbooks to feature a thicker and more robust cover, which is printed on 350gsm gloss card but without the added lamination. This will now be the standard specification for all our book range.
A6 Portrait size    28 pages full colour plus 4 page Allocation Supplement    £3.95 + £1 postage & packing
You can now buy the new Stagecoach Oxfordshire book here.

Friday 19th September 2014

Happy Friday!

Our Tayside Area (Angus, Dundee City, Perth & Kinross council areas) has gone off to print. A massive 972 pages, as we’ve experimentally increased the size of the print. So instead of reducing the text to fit the paper, we’ve done as much of the text as we can, at the size of the print in the timetable leaflet. As a result, this has to be printed on 80gsm paper. We had hoped this to be created on Enso Belle 70gsm paper, which would have weighed less. The reason we cannot is that there is a maximum 60mm (two and a half inches in old money) thickness per book. The paper, while lighter, is bulkier, so we are unable to use for this title. We will keep this until the next timetable book we do. As it’s bigger than we’d expected, the price has been increased to £24.00, still post-free. You can buy a copy here.

In our other titles – Strathtay The Story So Far is the next on the list. Thanks everyone for your patience! After that, we have Surrey/East Berks, Fife, Passing Around Scotland (which should commence after the 23rd October 2014 CalMac timetable change), and Wilts & Swindon – in no particular order. We will then expect to have some London titles late October/early November time, and everything else not listed will be thereafter.

Some of our customers may have received a partially – printed copy of our recent Northumberland title. This was as a result of three graphics pages not printing properly, despite being fine in the proof. Our printer has apologised, and is happy to replace any copies free of charge to you and us. So, if you’ve had a copy which has these pages damaged in the Tickets section, drop us a line or give us a ring with your details. We will then get a free replacement sent out to you.

We had a slight backlog of orders recently while our printer trained staff on their new presses. We can confirm all are now sent out.

Steven Knight Media news – Norfolk Green September 204 edition has been released, and is now on sale for £3.95 + £1.00 P&P. The Stagecoach North East book has been postponed until the New Year. You can now buy the new Norfolk Green book here.

Thursday 31st July 2014

We will be closed between Friday 1st August and
Monday 18th August 2014. However, the call centre & telesales
team will be open throughout (they will get the English bank
holiday off on the 24th of August only, when they will be closed),
although there will be a delay in fulfilling orders. The dates
shown reflect these closures, and our other plans and
commitments for the rest of 2014.`

In other news… Northumberland 2014 now ready (238 pages) and Doe’s Directory 35X (110 pages) are all now finished with orders being processed.

Wednesday 23rd July 2014

Our emailing list is now using a tool called MailChimp. If you’ve not been getting our emails lately, please accept my apologies! We are investigating, but this should certainly improve the way we do things in the short tem. Feel free to subscribe (or again!) via the box above.

Monday 21st July 2014

Our website has now been fully updated to include the Herts and Essex titles we will have on sale soon.

Monday 21st July 2014

Our our 2012/13 accounts show a larger loss than our first year, £2,674 vs. £451.  This figure is really skewed by the majority of the loss was over two thousand pounds of moving costs in October 2012 – including £300 for a year’s redirection of mail for example and a £500 moving that ended up being twice that! A full copy can be had on request free of charge from us, or sold via Companies House.

Monday 14th July 2014 19.55

Our new Catalogue and Newsletter is now online, with all the latest news. You can either click here to download a traditional PDF, or click here to view our new animated edition of our catalogue, and we’d welcome your feedback on this.

19.55 update – all web pages updated except Essex & Herts. If you’d like to order any of the new titles and don’t yet see it online, keep coming back! You can also call us to order on 01707 246232 – now open 08.30 to 18.00 Monday to Friday, except English Bank Holidays where our team will be happy to help.

Monday 14th July 2014

We have completed an Update to our Cambridgeshire & Peterborough book. This is about to be printed for those who bought the book. This can be downloaded via the Updates page.

Wednesday 9th July 2014

A new Catalouge & Newsletter will be availlabile in the next week or so, including new editions of Doe’s Directory and Northumberland.
In the meantime, the Strathtay book (The Story So Far) is now expected late July/mid-August time. If you pre-order it now, you will get it on the day of release. Please accept our apologies for the delay.

Tuesday 13th May 2014

We now have a new telesales team, who are open five days a week, based up the road in Ely. Call 01707 246232 as now, now extended hours from 08.30 to 18.00, every day Monday to Friday, except English bank holidays. Click here for more details, including our new Contact Directory.

We have changed our bankers, so the 80p cheque surcharge for orders under £10.00 has been scrapped.

To reflect these changes, we have reissued and updated the Steven Knight Media titles leaflet, and the Customer Charter/Terms & Conditions Leaflet too.

We will have a completely new Newsletter & Price List/Order Form either towards the end of this month, or early next – with lots of exciting news, and some brand new titles!

Wednesday 26th March 2014

The Cambridgeshire book has been printed. There are a few pages that did not come out exactly as we’d have hoped, so we have done an extra Stop Press (in addition to the Update that will come later). Click here to download – it also contains some information not in the original book.

We have a brand new title from Steven Knight – launched this week is More Midland Red Memories. The book is the follow-up to the popular books Midland Red Around Nuneaton & Coventry, and Midland Red Memories. You can now order more via this link, or you can print an order form here.

Thursday 27th February 2014
Cambs book has gone off for proofing – should be 696 pages.
Steven Knight Media titles page now updated.

Tuesday 25th February 2014

Cambridgshire book is now finally nearing reissue! Complete with all the timetables for changes up to and including Monday 24th February 2014 (i.e. including changes from this past weekend), we now have it 95% ready, and ready to roll! Click here to find out more, or order a copy. If you’d prefer to send a cheque – no problem – click here for a printable form.

Another of Suzy’s projects – the Strathtay “Story so far”. This is a history of the fleet, illustrated, full colour, and well worth a buy, if I do say so! This goes from the 1985 formation up to March 2013, shortly before everything was moved onto the Stagecoaach FIfe operator licence. It’s almost done, and getting tidied up after the Cambs book goes to press. So, I expect it to be finished in time for April 2014.

Click here to find out more, or order a copy. If you’d prefer to send a cheque – no problem – click here for a printable form.

In other news…

A few of you have been asking about the next edition of the Northumberland timetable. We were looking at starting one about now, following commercial changes registered for next month. NCC have advised us that a number of their contracts are due to expire in April (some may be extended for a short time), but the contracts have not been let. This includes all the Summer-only services. With that in mind, we are pausing progress until about April/May time, and we then expect a finished book to be on sale for May/June time. Thanks in advance for your support – we’d rather hold fire for a wee bit longer. In the meantime, the existing book is now just £9.00 including postage & packing (was £10.60) – March 2012 & the supplement March 2013.

Theee are a number of new books from Steven Knight coming soon, including a Stagecoach Yorkshire, to add to the Stagecoach West and Norfolk Green books done since the last newsletter. Download a new mail order form here, or click here to order your books online.

Don’t want to jinx it – but all the problems from the old printing company appear to have been fixed by our new account manager! Maybe they do want our business after all…. anyhoo prices are now set so we can print from either printing house, as and when we need to.

Tuesday 18th February 2014

We’re NOT open as scheduled tomorrow (Wednesday 19th February 2014), as Suzy is off for her MOT at Genetics in Cambridge. So leave a message after the beep, and we’ll ring you back on our arrival. Leave contact details and best time to call.

If you are looking to deliver to H2T/SRS/CMM we’ll be in the whole day on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st instead.

Thursday 6th February 2014

Welcome to February!

We have a new Barry Doe’s Directory 35 now in print, which you can find & buy here.
